There are various Marys in the New Testament, but we are thinking about Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We can read about her in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 1:

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth,
27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

Now for those believers who think that Jesus is God (trinity), this makes Mary the mother of God! This gives us great difficulties. How can an Eternal God without beginning have a mother?

During the time of Jesus’ work on earth, it would seem that Mary and the brothers of Jesus did not start off as believers and followers:

31 Then His mother and His brothers *arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called Him.
32 A crowd was sitting around Him, and they *said to Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.”
33 Answering them, He *said, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
34 Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He *said, “Behold My mother and My brothers!
35 “For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.”

They were not at that time amongst his followers. We would certainly wish to offer our appreciation and respect for the vital role that Mary played in God’s plan, but there is nothing in the Bible to suggest for a minute that Mary should be worshipped.

John 19:25 Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"

Acts 1:14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

These Scriptures show that Mary continued to believe in her Son and helped to spread the Good News, but there is no biblical evidence whatsoever to support Mary being worshipped.

Luke 11:27While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” 28But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.“

Even while Jesus was still on earth, there were those who wanted to elevate Mary and Jesus expressly told them not to do it, because it was not part of God’s Plan.

We don’t know much about Mary following Jesus ascending to Heaven although legends exist and in certain churches, there seem to be regular “appearances” of a vision of Mary, resulting in the place becoming a place of pilgrimage. Again, this practice is not to be found in Scripture, but is down to the money-making acumen of the Cardinals and Popes over the centuries.

The whole veneration of Mary above and beyond what the Bible tells us and is closer to the earth-mother worship of ancient pagans than anything Jesus ever did. The statues of Mary that people bow down to and pray to is simply a case of idolatry, which God forbids in the Second Commandment: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image“.

Also, it is futile addressing our prayers to Mary. The Bible says:

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

Yes; Jesus is our Mediator, no-one else, especially since all the other dead, including Mary are sleeping in the grave, awaiting resurrection at the return of Jesus as King over the Earth.

“in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.”(1 Corinthians 15:52&3)

So we need to our eyes firmly fixed on the Father and the Son, not the Mother!
